Flames pick surfer in second round

OTTAWA — Mitch Wahl is one of six new Calgary Flames following the second and final day of the NHL draft on Saturday, but he’s the only one who got a high-school credit for surfing.
Wahl was born in Long Beach, Calif., and grew up in Seal Beach, just down the road from San Diego. Just down the street from his house was the beach. The only thing missing from the surfer stereotype on the six-foot, 175-pounder is the obligatory blond hair.

Doan: Second coming of Captain Canada

QUEBEC — There was no one more qualified to be the Canadian captain at this year’s IIHF World Hockey Championship than Shane Doan.
He proved last year that he can handle intense off-ice pressure while continuing to be a leader on it and will have to again show that resolve over the coming weeks with Canada hosting this event for the first time ever.
