QUEBEC — It wasn’t supposed to end like this.

The ice at Le Colisee Pepsi was covered with a sea of red gloves and helmets and not one of them belonged to a Canadian player. Instead, you had Alex Ovechkin skating around kissing his new gold medal over and over while Ilya Kovalchuk grabbed a television camera and screamed into it.

QUEBEC — It doesn’t get much better than this.

The top line delivered another huge performance Friday as Canada beat Sweden 5-4 to set up a gold medal game with Russia at the IIHF World Hockey Championship.

Canada survives scare from U.S.
HALIFAX — It was a win so typically Canadian that it could be part of a patriotic beer ad.

The U.S. team outplayed the hosts for good stretches of Tuesday night’s game but it was O Canada that was played over the Metro Centre speakers when it was over.

Canada lays thumping on Latvia
HALIFAX — Everything is falling into place for Team Canada at the IIHF World Hockey Championship.

A 7-0 win over Latvia on Sunday represents the start of bigger things for the squad, which now finds itself as the last Canadian outfit playing hockey with professionals after the Montreal Canadiens were eliminated from the NHL playoffs.

Canada adds Heatley, Spezza for worlds
QUEBEC — Ken Hitchcock doesn’t have to think back very far to remember a time when things weren’t this good.

He was an assistant coach on the Canadian team at the 2002 IIHF World Hockey Championship when more than 60 players declined an invitation to represent their country. GM Lanny McDonald ended up having to turn to European-based players just to field a team at the event in Sweden.

Doan: Second coming of Captain Canada

Second coming of Captain Canada
QUEBEC — There was no one more qualified to be the Canadian captain at this year’s IIHF World Hockey Championship than Shane Doan.

He proved last year that he can handle intense off-ice pressure while continuing to be a leader on it and will have to again show that resolve over the coming weeks with Canada hosting this event for the first time ever.
