Canucks get rid of a pair of assistants
VANCOUVER — The Vancouver Canucks fired assistant coaches Barry Smith and Mike Kelly on Wednesday.

The coaches were informed of the decision by head coach Alain Vigneault.

It’s the first personnel move made since new Canucks GM Mike Gillis took over for the fired Dave Nonis.

Vigneault, who is entering the final year of his contract, and assistant Rick Bowness are remaining with the team for now.

“I wouldn’t say it’s shocking, when Gillis was hired he said he was going to have a thorough inquiry into the whole organization … and you expected some change somewhere along the line.” Canucks forward Brendan Morrison told Vancouver radio station The Team 1040 on Wednesday.

“This is his first change … but I mean any time guys lose their jobs it doesn’t really leave a good taste in your mouth, knowing that you’re in it together and you’re on a team and everyone has to work together to be successful.”
